The two most commonly found digital connection options on the back of hi-fi and home cinema equipment are the SP dif and optical connections. Some equipment however also offers the chance to connect via a 3 pin XLR to 3 pin XLR. This is the AES EBU connection. AES EBU is used extensively in studios but is increasingly appearing on the back of high-end domestic digital to analogue converters and transports.
For many users of high quality digital to analogue converters and matching transports the AES EBU connection has proved to be extremely frustrating. In many cases, users have found that the simple SP dif connection would out-perform the AES EBU connection, almost regardless of the cable that was used. Due to the increase in the number of available stand-alone digital to analogue converters, Chord felt that it was time to re-investigate the AES EBU connection. The end result of this is the Signature AES EBU cable.
